Abstract:
Combination of nylon impregnated gypsum blocks with a data logger system proved to be a valuable tool for studying soil water extraction by field crops.
Development of effective rooting depth during crop growth as well as influences of changes in soil properties down the profile upon the amount of extractable soil water could be deduced from diurnal block readings.
Differences of water extraction by maize within and between the plant rows could be monitored by a battery powered version of the data logger system.
