BREEDING PROGRAM AND VARIETY SITUATION IN ARGENTINA

Abstract:
Tomato for processing breeding program in Argentina is basically oriented to adapt varieties to local conditions. National Institute for Agricultural Technology (INTA) leads this program in two Experimental Stations, one in La Consulta, Mendoza and the other in Alto Valle, Rio Negro. Main objetives have been to obtain nematode and Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV) resistant varieties. In this program hundreds of varieties are tested by evaluation of agronomy and industry aspects. Last season main varieties created by this program were 30% of national seed demand. In La Consulta Experiment Station there are more than 600 registrations germplasm including wild species. The final objective of this program is seed production to supply basic seed to private seed companies and small cooperatives.
