ISHS Acta Horticulturae 277: III International Symposium on Processing Tomatoes

APPLICATION OF MOLECULAR MARKER TECHNOLOGY TO TOMATO IMPROVEMENT

Authors:   J. Nienhuis, T. Helentjaris
Abstract:
Restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) are genetic markers which can be used as indirect section criteria for traits with low heritabilities. In a population derived from a cross between a commercial tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum, cultivar ‘UC82’ and an accession of a wild tomato species, L. chmielewskii ‘LA1028’ 100 F3 families were evaluated for expression of soluble solids. The phenotypic information for soluble solids was combined with genotypic information from 49 RFLP markers, and seven RFLP markers associated with the expression of soluble solids were identified. Indirect selection, based on RFLP genotype, was successful in discriminating among F3 families for expression of soluble solids.
