ISHS Acta Horticulturae 277: III International Symposium on Processing Tomatoes

WEED CONTROL IN PROCESSING TOMATO CROPS

Author:   X. BRANTHOME
Abstract:
Controlling weeds needs to be adequate the knowledge of the potential flora, of the interference of some species, and of the cultural practices. The "Solanum" complex is the main obstacle towards processed tomato crops.

Actually, we have the necessary and complementary means to protect transplanted tomatoes. However the perennial weeds appear more frequently.

The increase of direct seeded tomatoes involves the definition of consistent strategies. The use before preemergence of mixed herbicides does not control Solanum nigrum L.. Three ways can be considered: a weed control program with directed dessicant sprays against the seedlings of black nightshade before the critical period ; the second way is the located disinfection of beds ; after all, getting a resistant variety towards an efficient herbicide against Solanum sp. is the purpose of a recent research.
