Abstract:
Fruit size has become increasingly important in determining the profitability of an orchard with the proper management of crop load being vital to the production of fruit in the preferred market sizes.
A computerised Decision Support Aid is described which enhances the ability of orchardists to make informed decisions regarding target crop loads by enabling them to explore the outcomes of different management strategies in terms of distribution of fruit sizes produced and profitability.
The model used within the Decision Aid to simulate the effects of crop load on fruit size and total yield is described and examples given of the types of information produced.
While the example given is for a kiwifruit orchard, the concept of using relatively simple simulation models for providing Decision Support is generally applicable to all fruit crops.
