SCREENING OF AVOCADO ROOTSTOCKS FOR TOLERANCE TO PHYTOPHTHORA CINNAMOMI WITH VARIOUS IN VITRO TECHNIQUES AND THE POSSIBLE ROLE OF AMINO ACIDS IN RESISTANCE

Authors:   T. Botha, F.C. Wehner, J.M. Kotzé
Abstract:
This study concentrated on two aspects of resistance, viz zoospore attraction to and colonisation of avocado roots. A dialysis membrane technique was developed to quantify zoospore attraction to roots of four avocado rootstocks. The chemotaxic response of zoospores to root exudates was determined and the exudates analysed for amino acids. A correlation was found between amino acid exudation and susceptibility of avocado roots to P. cinnamomi. Duke 7, G6 and Martin Grande roots attracted significantly fewer zoospores than Edranol roots. A modified agar plate technique was used to measure root colonisation. Results correlated with known resistance of the rootstocks tested.
