Abstract:
The historical build-up of valid concepts for guiding fertilizer use through plant analysis is depicted, irrespective of crops and climates except for some particular implementations.
Both from the author's experience and from miscellaneous bibliographical sources, the usefulness of a deeper knowledge of nutritional processes in tropical fruit plants is also illustrated (e.g. functions of K in the banana plant). A need arises for enlarged methodologies, in view of socio-ecological constraints likely to take more importance in the near future.
Due to their high mineral requirement, tropical fruits should pioneer novel techniques of integrated management based on plant + climate demand and offer optimization.
