POLAR AUXIN TRANSPORT IN FRUIT TREES IN RELATION TO FRUIT DROP

Author:   F. Bangerth
Abstract:
In previous experiments with mandarins, apples and peaches we could not demonstrate a correlation between extractable hormones (IAA, ABA, GA3, ethylene) and natural or growth regulator-induced fruit abscission. There was, however, an indication that treatments reducing fruitlet drop (gibberellin application) or thinning treatments with ethephon, NAAm, carbaryl etc. affected polar auxin transport out of fruits in an opposite direction. Experiments were continued with potted Citrus madurensis and apple trees in the open and in the greenhouse. The effect of inter-fruit competition or dominance, growth regulator treatments, and stress conditions on fruit set and diffusible IAA was investigated. A general hypothesis on the role of polar IAA-transport in fruit set/drop will be presented.
