ISHS Acta Horticulturae 275: International Symposium on the Culture of Subtropical and Tropical Fruits and Crops

UNDER-EXPLOITED FRUIT-VEGETABLES CAN ENHANCE THE WORLD FOOD SUPPLY

Author:   J.F. Morton
Abstract:
Most cultivated tree fruits are classifiable as dessert fruits and some are mainly sources of juice or preserves. On the other hand, there are a few fruit-vegetables, important in certain areas of the world but under-exploited or totally unknown elsewhere, that could make major contributions to world nutrition because of high protein or starch content and high productivity with little horticultural improvement. Those discussed in this paper are the jackfruit, breadfruit, plantain banana, canistel and akee.
