Abstract:
Shoot tips and nodal sections of Piper niqrum were used to establish an in vitro technique for microprogation of pepper.
Necrosis and contamination of the cultures severely hampered the establishment phase.
Fungal spores, apparently enclosed by the sheath covering the shoot tip and lateral buds, were released after sheath expansion and spread rapidly, while endogenous bacteria were exuded from the base of the explant into the medium.
Various pre-treatments and methods of sterilisation were evaluated.
