ISHS Acta Horticulturae 275: International Symposium on the Culture of Subtropical and Tropical Fruits and Crops

THE EFFECT OF CULTAR® APPLIED AS A SOIL DRENCH ON MAURITIUS LITCHI TREES

Author:   A.J. Rowley
Abstract:
The warm subtropical climate of the South African Lowveld results in excessive vegetative growth and eventually large, difficult to manage trees. This management problem promoted the evaluation of Cultar for growth suppression efficacy. A trial was initiated in 1986 applying four treatments of Cultar to ten year old 'Mauritius' litchi trees. The treatments were re-applied in 1987 and 1988. Cultar reduced the length of vegetative shoot growth. Yield per tree was not affected in the first year but was substantially increased in the second year. Tree height was substantially reduced after 19 months.

Name of chemical used : B-[(4-Chlorophenyl)methyl]-a-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-ethanol (paclobutrazol).
