ISHS Acta Horticulturae 274: International Symposium on Diagnosis of Nutritional Status of Deciduous Fruit Orchards

THE INFLUENCE OF CHERRY ROOTSTOCKS ON THE CONTENT OF MAJOR NUTRIENTS OF 3 SWEET CHERRY CULTIVARS

Author:   J. Ystaas
Abstract:
The mineral composition of mid-shoot leaves of the sweet cherry cultivars ‘Van’, ‘Ulster’ and ‘Sam’ on rootstock Colt and F12/1 was studied during 8 years (1981–88). The leaf N and K content was significantly higher on trees of all cultivars on F12/1 compared to trees on Colt. Trees of ‘Ulster’ on F12/1 had significant higher P content of leaf dry matter than trees on Colt. All cultivars on Colt had significantly higher values of leaf Mg and Ca than trees on F12/1. The consistent difference found in major nutrients of sweet cherry leaves of trees grown on Colt and F12/1 indicates that trees on Colt are less efficient in absorption of plant available N, K and P in the soil. These findings should be taken into account when fertilizer recommendations are made.
