ISHS Acta Horticulturae 274: International Symposium on Diagnosis of Nutritional Status of Deciduous Fruit Orchards

ROLE OF FIELD TRIALS IN DEVELOPMENT AND REFINEMENT OF SOIL AND TISSUE DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA

Author:   D.H. Webster
Abstract:
The primordial diagnostic test may be represented as a scale or ruler with three labels (poor, uncertain and good) spaced along it. Information from field trials helps to calibrate these scales and helps to develop the insight into the workings of soils and plants so that interpretations and corrective procedures can be improved. Conversely, these diagnostic tests act as a frame of reference so that information from field trials and other sources can be accumulated, classified and studied so as to shed some light on those age-old questions of what makes a soil fertile, how to make it more fertile and how to keep it that way.

More emphasis on synthesis and generation of coordinated technology would lead to better use of accumulated and accumulating experience.
