ISHS Acta Horticulturae 274: International Symposium on Diagnosis of Nutritional Status of Deciduous Fruit Orchards

INFLUENCE OF NITROGEN NUTRITION ON COX'S ORANGE PIPPIN AND M9/J9 CLONE COMBINATIONS

Authors:   F.-K. Schembecker, P. Lüdders
Abstract:
In a four year outdoor pot experiment (1982–1985) the influence of the N nutrition on the leaf and fruit mineral content of three clones of the apple cultivar Cox's Orange Pippin (Cox 4 Rheinland, Cox Schweiz and Cox Ley) on three rootstock clones (M9–719, M9–984 and J9) was investigated. The trees were supplied with 5 and 10 meg nitrate/l nutrient solution.

In the time from July to September, the N content of the leaves increased, while the K concentration rose from July to August and decreased after that. In the fruits of all trees the N and K content decreased from July to September.

Especially in July, the high N nutrition caused an increase of the leaf N content, whereas the K concentration was diminished in all months. In the fruits, high N nutrition led to an increase of the N content in July and to a decrease of the K content in August and September.

Only in August and with high N nutrition, trees on J9 had a higher N and K concentration of the leaves than those on M9–719 and M9–984, whereas in all months the N and K content of the fruits were higher with trees on J9 than on the M9 clones.
