EFFECT OF DIFFERENT FUNGICIDES FOR APPLE SCAB CONTROL ON THE MINERAL COMPOSITION OF APPLE LEAVES

Abstract:
The relation between fungicides and nutrient composition of plant tissues comprises three points: (1) Fungicides affect the development of diseases caused by pathogens which can alter the nutrient metabolism of the host plant, (2) Fungicides may contain elements that can be taken up by the plant via root or leaf. In an experimental orchard of the Institute of Pomology and Floriculture, the effectiveness of 9 fungicides in apple scab control was compared. In each of the special programmes only one of the fungicides tested was applied in recommended concentrations 8 times during the season. Leaf samples of McIntosh apple cv. were collected in August 1988 in three replications. In leaves, the N, P, K, Ca and Mg concentrations were determined by the methods used in Poland for diagnostic purposes. Apple scab control programmes altered significantly the P, K and Mg levels in leaves. There were, for instance, differences in leaf P concentrations between trees sprayed with Captan, Systane 12 EC, Dorado and Punch 40 EC (lower level) and Rondo M (higher level). The concentration of potassium was similar in many cases, but in the check plants as well as in the leaves of trees sprayed with Syllit and Systane MZ it reached the highest level. Accumulation of Mg as high as 0.288% of d.m. of the leaves was found within the trees sprayed with Syllit, while in a few other cases it was significantly lower. There were no differences in leaf N and Ca between the treatments.
