ISHS Acta Horticulturae 274: International Symposium on Diagnosis of Nutritional Status of Deciduous Fruit Orchards

THE EFFECT OF CROP LOAD IN ASSESSING THE NUTRIENT REQUIREMENTS OF APPLE TREES

Authors:   R.P. AWASTHI, N.S. KAITH
Abstract:
In 16-year-old Delicious apple trees under on and off year conditions, major amount of mineral nutrients was removed by the harvested fruits followed by pruning wood, whereas abscised flowers, fruitlets and senescent leaves contributed little amount to the total uptake. Trees with an yield of 16.9 t ha-1 removed 75.3 Kg N, 14.5 Kg P, 139 Kg K, 23.8 Kg Ca, 8.2 Kg Mg, 1.5 Kg Fe, 0.13 Kg Mn, 0.23 Kg Zn and 0.2 Kg Cu ha-1 whereas, trees with an yield of 4.1 t ha-1 removed 15.4 Kg N, 4.4 Kg P and 34.7 Kg K, 10.5 Kg Ca, 2.9 Kg Mg, 0.4 Kg Fe, 0.04 Kg Mn, 0.05 Kg Zn and 0.04 Kg Cu ha-1. This shows that crop load largely determines the nutrient uptake of the trees and should be used as a guide for the fertilization of apple trees.
