Abstract:
Experiments on the chemical control of fire blight, widely reported in the literature, range from the assessment of the efficacy of treatments against inoculated plants held under controlled conditions to assessment against different levels of natural infection (for which from one to ten spray applications may be made) on different hosts and under different climatic conditions.
A component of the Agrimed programme of the European Economic Community involves a fire blight group within which a sub-group is concerned with the chemical control of the disease.
This sub-group has found it difficult to compare published results of control experiments due to the wide variation in materials, host plants and procedure.
It therefore compiled guidelines for the conduct of future experiments within the European Community to introduce some standardisation for the evaluation of chemical control of fire blight.
This should facilitate comparison of experiments for control on different hosts, in different geographical areas and climatic conditions.
