FIRE BLIGHT INCIDENCE IN PEAR ORCHARDS AND ITS CONTROL IN EGYPT

Authors:   S. El-Nasr, I. Hamdy, M. H. Ali
Abstract:
Pear orchards in northern of Egypt have been covered with fire blight disease since its outbreak in 1982 and up to now. A loss ranged from 75–90% from developed blossoms and yield has been recorded according to plant ages and growing area. Experiments for disease control over five years proved that copper compound, i.e., Koppak E (200 and 300 cm3/100 L.), Copper sulfate (2500 ppm) and Copper oxychloride (2500 ppm) were not effective against blight infection. The bactericide Sumitomo S-0208 had sprayed on pear plants in 1988 for five times, the 1st at 300 ppm before Blooming and the other four times at 400 ppm with 7 days intervals. An excellent protection was obtained where 76.9% to 96.4% of blossoms were free of infection and fruits developed normally.
