ISHS Acta Horticulturae 273: V International Workshop on Fireblight

EVALUATION OF KASUMIN FOR CONTROL OF FIRE BLIGHT

Authors:   HERB S. ALDWINCKLE, JOHN L. NORELLI
Abstract:
Orchard trials using artificial inoculation were made in 1986 and 1987 on 12-to 13-yr-old Idared/M.7 apple trees. Test chemicals were first applied at 75% bloom (1986) or 25% bloom (1987). 24 hr later blossoms were inoculated by spraying with an aqueous suspension of 1 x 107 cfu Erwinia amylovora ml-1. Another application of test chemical was made 24 hr after inoculation, at early petal fall (1986) or 100% bloom (1987). About 7 weeks later, the proportion infected of all treated blossom clusters was determined. In both years Kasumin significantly reduced the proportion of blossom clusters infected when compared with a water check. In 1986 there was no significant difference in disease control obtained with Kasumin at 600 mg active ingredient (ai)L-1, at 300 mg aiL-1, at 150 mg aiL-1; and Kasumin was significantly more effective in control of blossom blight than was Agri-strep (streptomycin) at 100 mg aiL-1. All rates of Kasumin were clearly phytotoxic in 1986, causing petal burn, foliar damage, and poor fruit set. In 1987 there was no significant difference in disease control by Kasumin at 150 or 50 mg aiL-1, or by Agri-strep at 100 mg aiL-1. No serious phytoxicity problems were observed with Kasumin in 1987 at the rates used.
