Abstract:
In 1975 with Cotoneaster, Crataegus and Pyracantha a breeding programme for fire blight resistance was started and this is still continuing.
Most attention in this breeding programme is paid to Pyracantha. The programme started with collecting and testing cultivars.
At this moment the collection consists of 46 cultivars.
The tests were executed in a greenhouse by artificial infection.
In previous years 135 succesful crosses were made.
Over 4700 seedlings were tested and of these were 1464 cloned and tested again.
The progenies of these crosses showed much variation in percentage seedlings with symptoms.
Within the clones there proved to be variation in number of infested plants.
Clones with a high level of resistance in the greenhouse tests, were planted in an experimental field with a natural infection for fire blight.
Up till now 373 of the 1464 clones tested were planted in 5 replications of one plant each.
In the field characteristics like susceptibility for scab and winter hardiness were studied as well.
