ISHS Acta Horticulturae 273: V International Workshop on Fireblight

EVALUATION OF CRABAPPLE CULTIVARS AND SELECTIONS FOR RESISTANCE TO FIRE BLIGHT

Authors:   W.G. Bonn, D.C. Elfving
Abstract:
Crabapples are increasingly being used for the pollination of single-cultivar apple orchards and for augmenting regular pollination in multi-cultivar orchards. To reduce the potential of introducing or increasing fire blight inoculum in orchards, a program was initiated in 1982 to evaluate crabapple cultivars and selections for resistance to this disease. Crabapples were clonally propagated onto either 'McIntosh' seedlings or M.26 rootstock and grown in environmental chambers (1982–83) and in the field (1984–89). Trees were inoculated by injecting a mixture of strains of Erwinia amylovora into actively growing shoot tips or blossoms. A range of susceptibility was observed among the many cultivars and selections. Some fire blight-resistant crabapples may be suitable for both apple orchards and the ornamentals industry.
