SIDEROPHORE GENES OF ERWINIA AMYLOVORA: CLONING AND PUTATIVE ROLE IN VIRULENCE

Authors:   B.J. Sneath, J.M. Howson, S.V. Beer
Abstract:
The genes encoding production of the hydroxamate siderophore of Erwinia amylovora have been cloned. Mutants of E. amylovora deficient in siderophore, and also reduced in virulence, were complemented with a wild-type library. Cosmids that restored siderophore production were tested for their effect on the virulence of the mutants. The virulence of one of the mutants was enhanced, but not completely restored, by a cosmid carrying the siderophore genes.
