ISHS Acta Horticulturae 273: V International Workshop on Fireblight

INFLUENCE OF CALCIUM AND POTASSIUM NUTRITION ON FIRE BLIGHT SUSCEPTIBILITY

Authors:   F. LEMAIRE, C. COUVREUR, J.-P. PAULIN, A. CADIC
Abstract:
The susceptibility to fire blight is depending on the mineral nutrition of the plants and particularly nitrogen supply (CADIC et al., 1987). Pyracantha cv. Mohave cuttings growing in hydroponic conditions allow study of the effect of others mineral nutrients, like potassium and calcium. The susceptibility of cuttings in different nutritive solutions has been assessed through the lenght of shoots necrosis, after artificial inoculation of the top.

Our results have shown that : the calcium level increase in a high nitrogen growing medium decreased the susceptibility ; the potassium level increase in the growing medium interacts with calcium : increasing the susceptibility in case of low calcium level and decreasing it in case of high calcium level.
