Abstract:
The first record of fire blight in Mexico appeared in 1921, being observed around Mexico City.
On the basis of official records and personal observation the disease is now distributed in practically all the pear and apple growing regions of Mexico.
These include the States of Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Jalisco, Michoacán, Puebla and Mexico, for pear.
The same applies to apple except that it has not been reported from San Luis Potosí and Jalisco.
In some parts of the States of Chihuahua and Mexico accurate estimates of losses are lacking.
Fire blight of pear and pyracantha has been observed in the State of Mexico, Chapingo regions, for many years.
Kochs postulates were fulfilled with pyracantha isolates on flowers and the bacteria were identified as Erwinia amylovora. Biochemical tests for pear isolate were the same as for the pyracantha isolate.
