GENIC MALE STERILITY IN PETUNIA

Authors:   R.T. Perkins III, L.C. Ewart
Abstract:
A sterile mutant was isolated from a hybrid grandiflora petunia cultivar and incorporated into a number of inbred lines. The expression of sterility was characterized solely by the absence of pollen, all other traits remaining unchanged. Following a series of backcrosses and self-pollinations, testcross ratios of fertile to sterile plants became stable and predictable. The system controlling sterility proved to be monogenic and recessive.
