Abstract:
The flower formation process at low temperature (10°C) in Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev. ‘Bright Golden Anne’ was compared to flower formation at 15°C. The transition from vegetative to reproductive meristem was documented by light, fluorescence, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at weekly intervals for 5 weeks.
SEM provided the best documentation for the progression of flower formation while the event of flower initiation was most easily detected using a fluorescence microscope or a stereo-microscope.
Both the initiation and development of flowers were delayed at 10° compared to 15°C. After 21 short days at 15°C, 7–8 rows of floret primordia were formed on the receptacle.
Plants grown at 10°C had formed 4–5 rows of floret primordia after 28 short days.
