POINSETTIA GROWTH IN MEDIA CONTAINING XE-1019 IMPREGNATED ROCKWOOL

Author:   R. J. McAvoy
Abstract:
Poinsettias were grown in peat:rockwool (RW) medium. Four RW aggregates, possessing different textures and moisture affinities, were compared. Half of the plants were grown in pots containing RW impregnated with the plant growth regulator (PGR) XE-1019 at either 0.15 or 0.30mg a.i. per pot. The remaining plants received either two foliar applications of daminozide (2,500ppm) or served as untreated controls. Poinsettia growth was significantly affected by both the RW and PGR treatment. All XE-1019 treated plants were significantly smaller than both the control and the daminozide treated plants. The absorbent/repellent nature of RW aggregates and the RW texture significantly affected poinsettia growth. Plant response to RW texture differed between the absorbent and the repellent materials. Chemical names used: Butananedioic acid mono (2,2-dimethylhydrazide), (daminozide or B-nine); (E)-(p-chlorophenyl) -4,4-dimethyl-2-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-1-penten-3-ol, (XE-1019).
