ISHS Acta Horticulturae 272: Symposium on Bedding and Pot Plant Culture

IDENTIFICATION OF CA MOVEMENT IN POINSETTIAS USING AUTORADIOGRAPHY

Authors:   Daniel J. Jacques, J.C. Peterson, R.E.J. Boerner
Abstract:
Rooted cuttings of two cultivars of Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. ('Annette Hegg Dark Red' and 'V-14 Glory') were grown in aerated complete solutions in order to determine if Ca-related puckering in the V-14 cultivar was related to differences in uptake and translocation of Ca as compared to the Dark Red cultivar. After 10 days of growth, plants were pulsed with 2 μCi of 45Ca for three days, then transferred to cold solutions. Autoradiographs of plants were taken immediately after, and 1, 7, 14, and 21 days after pulsing. Ca concentrations in roots and 3 stem sections of non-pulsed plants were measured at the same times. Results indicate no difference between cultivars in Ca concentrations or in Ca movement, indicating that the Ca-related problem in the V-14 cultivar is a more localized problem.
