INVESTIGATION INTO THE USE OF REDUCED TREATMENT SAMPLING TO LOWER EXPERIMENTAL COSTS

Authors:   S.J. McCormick, R.A. Littler
Abstract:
While daily cutting is essential to maintain the rhythm of spear production and spear quality, daily assessment of data sets for treatment effects is both time consuming and costly. Examination of the error associated with sampling treatment effects less frequently over a range of trials has indicated that weekly sampling is sufficient to rationally identify treatment difference in most situations. Keeping daily records of the total trimmed yield from the whole trial block to identify the pattern and extent of the season's yield and sampling treatment data sets on a weekly basis only, may allow for considerable saving to be made in research running costs.
