ISHS Acta Horticulturae 271: VII International Asparagus Symposium

GROWTH ANALYSIS OF SEEDLINGS AND SPEARS IN DIFFERENT ASPARAGUS GENOTYPES

Authors:   G. Stancanelli, G. Soressi, A. Falavigna
Abstract:
Asparagus seedlings of five hybrids and two open pollinated varieties were grown for 12 weeks in a climate chamber at a constant temperature of 25°C and 16 hours day-length. Starting from the emergence, the number of stems, roots, buds and the dry matter of fern, roots, crown were scored 6 times, with a two week interval.

Linear regression curves were fitted, against the time, for all seedling characters and the 7 tested asparagus genotypes. The parallelism tests showed that none of the hybrids performed better than open pollinated cv Early of Argenteuil and were inferior to it, for some traits.

Positive correlations were found between the seedling traits, but only the "stems + buds" number and the dry matter percentage partitioned in the roots of the seedlings appeared useful for an early screening of asparagus genotypes.
