THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON THE GROWTH OF ASPARAGUS SEEDLINGS

Authors:   A.R. Hughes, M.A. Nichols, D.J. Woolley
Abstract:
The growth of 4 cultivars of seedling asparagus was measured at 8 different temperatures in controlled climate. It was found that dry matter accumulation peaked at about 25C, but that a day/night differential of 10C resulted in increased growth at mean temperatures of 15 and 20C, but reduced growth at a mean temperature of 25C, when compared with growing the plants at a constant temperature.

It was found that the use of an allometric relationship between shoot and roots could provide a useful measure of dry matter distribution, irrespective of size of plant. The allometric relationships varied not only with cultivar, but also with temperature.
