ISHS Acta Horticulturae 271: VII International Asparagus Symposium

FOUR YEARS OF TRIALS (1985–1988) ON ASPARAGUS RUST (PUCCINIA ASPARAGI D.C.) IN LAZIO.

Authors:   M.G. Fantino, A. Granier, J. Solaini, D. Di Carmine
Abstract:
Asparagus rust (Puccinia asparagi) was considered to be of minor importance in the past as regard damage to asparagus beds, since it affected plants in the Autumn. Between 1985–88, field trials were carried out to assess the efficacy of various fungicides in controlling Puccinia asparagi and treatment times.

Products based on Bitertanol, alone or associated with Captan, regularly gave the best results; then in decreasing order the products based on Captan alone, Chlorothalonil and Penconazole + Captan, Penconazole alone, Fenpropimorph and Benodenil.

With Bitertanol and Captan it was observed that early treatment was more important than the number of treatments. It was essential to start treatment before the appearance of the uredia. This occurred with marked regularity during the trials at the end of July and beginning of August.

Special trials indicated the benefits of reducing the inoculum material present in the field, by cutting and removing the plants affected in the late Autumn. The distribution of urea for a better metabolization of the plant residues in the field also played a positive role.
