INTERACTION OF ASPARAGUS AUTOTOXIN WITH FUSARIUM |

| Abstract:
Greenhouse seedling emergence tests of autotoxin both as a crude filtrate and a methanol extract, from decaying roots of Asparagus officinalis showed consistent synergism with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. asparagi. The response to autotoxin dose was shown to be quadratic, but activity dissipated over time once the roots were severed from the plants. The soluble solids portion of the autotoxin, approximately 6.5%, appeared to enhance Fuasarium activity somewhat and may have indirectly increased disease; however, tests of crude filtrate and of the methanol extract from it indicated an autotoxin effect independent of the soluble solids. Increasing the salinity of the growing medium exacerbated autotoxicity, both in sterile and Fusarium-inoculated treatments, but diuron (Karmex), an herbicide used is some commercial asparagus fields, had no effect. | |
