ISHS Acta Horticulturae 271: VII International Asparagus Symposium

SURVEY ON ASPARAGUS VIRUS DISEASES IN ITALY

Authors:   A. Bertaccini, L. Giunchedi, C. Poggi Pollini
Abstract:
The indirect protein A sandwich ELISA technique was used to study the occurrence of asparagus virus 1 (AV1) and asparagus virus 2 (AV2) in fields of cvs Larac and Violetto d'Albenga. The presence of AV2 was also studied on seeds belonging to different commercial lots and on in vitro grown plantlets obtained by meristem-tip culture. AV1 occurred in all the fields tested with a higher frequency than AV2, with an infection level of 18 to 53%. AV2 was found in all "Larac" fields tested but in only 3 of the 5 "Violetto d'Albenga" fields, the percentage of infected plants in the formed fields ranged from 3 to 27%. In cv Larac the lower incidence of AV2 may be due to plantation age, less than 5 years, whereas in cv Violetto d'Albenga it may be related to the absence of the virus in commercial seed lots. Seed lots of other cultivars had an estimated AV2 infection ranging from 1.47 to 13%. The tests on in vitro grown plantlets permitted a distinction to be made between infected and virus-free mericlones.
