FIFTEEN YEARS OF EXPERIMENTS ON ASPARAGUS F1 HYBRIDS: SYNTHESIS, EVALUATION OF HOMOZYGOUS PARENTS AND APPLICATION TO THE FRENCH BREEDING PROGRAMME

Abstract:
In the french (INRA) long term breeding programme, since 1971, more than 400 asparagus F1 hybrids have been field experimented, generally in 4 locations.
Combining abilities of the homozygous parents have been evaluated for yield, early yield, spear diameter, spear number and spear appearance.
The advantage of using supermales, which are homozygous genotypes with an all male progeny, is confirmed.
A negative correlation between the 2 main yield components (spear number and spear diameter) limits the genetic progress on these 2 characters simultaneously.
A reciprocal recurrent selection is proposed to undertake a second selection cycle with genotypes choosen according to their combining abilities for the different breeding characters.
