ISHS Acta Horticulturae 271: VII International Asparagus Symposium

EFFECT OF INITIAL ASPARAGUS POPULATIONS ON SURVIVAL AND YIELD.

Authors:   D.C. Sanders, C.A. Prince, P.P. David, M.R. McMurtry
Abstract:
The influence of cultivar, row number, in-row spacing and establishment method on yield and survival of asparagus from various studies were evaluated for 9 or 11 years from planting. Three of four cultivars had increased yields at 5 years and all four at 9 years when row number increased from 1 to 2. All 4 cultivars showed increased mortality in double rows. In an in-row spacing vs row number crown established study, double rows continued to produce greater yields and exhibit increased mortality through year 9, but yield differences with closer in-row spacing decreased with time. Survival decreased with plant population increase. Similar responses were noted for transplant and direct seeding establishment procedures.
