THE POTENTIAL OF TRUE POTATO SEEDS IN POTATO PRODUCTION IN ETHIOPIA

Author:   S. Yilma
Abstract:
Production of tuber using True Potato Seed (TPS) technique is a new technology of economic advantage to developing countries like Ethiopia. It only takes 200gms of TPS seeds per hectare as compared to 20 quintals. Thus, the use of TPS minimize the cost of seeds. It also minimizes transportation & storage problems. Furthermore, the use of TPS will enable to use potato tubers only for human food. The transmission of diseases particulary viral diseases will be minimized considerably.

A number of experiments were conducted at Alemaya inorder to determine the yield potential and marketability of potatoes derived from TPS. As the result open pollinated potato parents with uniform characteristics have been identified. Furthermore, methods of establishment and other cultural practices were studied.

In general the results from all experiments indicated that some TPS parents produced comparable yield with the conventional method of potato production.
