ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF A POLE AND FUELWOOD PRODUCTION PROJECT IN THE HARARGHE HIGHLANDS, EASTERN ETHIOPIA

Authors:   H.-J. Hergert, H. Uibrig
Abstract:
Low advancement in community forestry development in the eastern Ethiopian highlands gave rise to evaluate a related project in a Farmers Producers' Cooperative in the Alemaya catchment from an economic point of view. Assumptions made are based on investigations in the field and consultation of specialists.

The results of calculations using the cost-benefit analysis show that community forestry projects can be run economically effective under the conditions given in the Alemaya catchment.

Low yielding denuded sites provide less substantial output and net return after longer periods of time as compared to good quality land. Since the initial investments to wood production play an important role for the efficiency of projects in community forestry, afforestation work has to be done carefully and young forest stands should consciously be protected from damage by the whole community.
