CONSUMPTION RESEARCH OF GARLIC IN INDONESIA

Authors:   M. Ameriana, S.B. Rofik, M. Rachmat
Abstract:
The research of garlic consumption was carried out in Bandung, Indonesia from September 1988 to February 1989. The objectives of this research were:
  1. to estimate the level of garlic consumption per capita per day, and
  2. to determine which quality of garlic is being prefered by the consumer.

The survey was accomplished in two phases: a pre survey and a formal survey. The respondent were housewives. There were 50 respondents with a high income level and 54 respondents with a low income level. The respondents were chosen through stratified random sampling methods.

The research showed that the average consumption of garlic per capita per day for high income levels (x=1.68 gr/cap/day) was significantly higher (t-student test .01) than that for low income levels (x=0.46 gr/cap/day). It was estimated with a confidence interval of 99%, that the population mean for high income levels ranged from 1.29 – 2.07 gr/cap/day, while for the low income levels it ranged from 0.34 – 0.58 gr/cap/day. Consumers prefered (both high income level and low income level): big sized garlics, thin skin, white skin colour, moderate hardness and moderate flavour. The high income levels like a white or yellowish white flesh color, while the low income levels prefer white flesh rather than yellowish white.
