Abstract:
Referring to this volume of collected papers we recall the kind surroundings of the Alemaya University in the Ethiopian Highlands.
Much appreciation is extended to the Alemaya University for the perfect organization, the excellent living and working conditions during the symposium and the highly interesting excursions organized.
These efforts greatly contributed to the social success and the professional milestone set by this symposium.
Sincere acknowledgements have to be expressed towards the representatives of the host country, whose strong personal involvement have made the symposium a full success.
Especially the opening by Dr.
Mulugeta Semru, Vice-Minister of Education and the activities of the National Organizing Committee deserve a special mentioning.
Since horticulture is a fast growing sector in developing countries with specific conditions and problems involved, the need for a separate symposium under the umbrella of the Commission for Horticultural Economics evolved.
During the symposium the establishment of a working group on Horticultural Economics in Developing Countries is proposed under the above mentioned commission.
Former symposia of the Commission for Horticultural Economics have been held in the following countries:

Since women play an important role in horticulture production and marketing in developing countries, a special topic on the role of women in horticulture was incorporated in the programme.
The organization is proud that a group of women participants presented a number of papers on this topic.
