Abstract:
Aflatoxin, a toxic metabolite from fungi, occur in badly stored cereals, nuts and dried fruits.
Levels of aflatoxins in imported dried figs were estimated using a diagnostic Aflatest System for extraction.
This entailed blending the macerated sample in 60% methanol, filtration and then absorption on a monoclonal affinity column.
The aflatoxins were eluted from the column by HPLC methanol.
The aflatoxins were identified by Thin Layer Chromatography and quantified Fluorimetrically.
The results indicate higher ranges of aflatoxins between 150 ug/kg and 241 ug/kg.
These levels are much higher than the tolerance limits set by certain nations.
The species of fungi identified were Aspergillus (especially flavus), Rhizopus, Mucor and Penicillium.
Aspects of quality control e.g., sampling, conditions of storage, packaging to prevent fungal growth are discussed; the risks to health are highlighted.
