FACTORS INFLUENCING DEVELOPMENT OF POSTHARVEST INCIDENCE OF RHIZOPUS SOFT ROT OF PAPAYA

Authors:   W.T. Nishijima, S. Ebersole, John A. Fernandez
Abstract:
Rhizopus soft rot of papayas caused by Rhizopus stolonifer, frequently causes significant losses of papaya during shipment and storage. Some of the factors identified as influencing Rhizopus soft rot are: nature and type of wounds, rainfall, mancozeb field sprays, postharvest hot-water treatments, and postharvest storage conditions. Mancozeb field sprays are suspected of reducing Rhizopus soft rot incidence by reducing field initiated fruit diseases whose lesions serve as courts of infection for R. stolonifer.
