ISHS Acta Horticulturae 269: Symposium on Tropical Fruit in International Trade

TREND OF WORLD PRODUCTION OF AND ECOLOGICAL MEANING OF TROPICAL FRUIT IN THE PERIOD 1960 TO 1986

Author:   O. Kishimoto
Abstract:
Trend of world production and exportation of banana, pineapple, orange, date palm, coconut, coffee and cocoa have been studied. In this period, the world population increased from 3.0 to 4.8 billions. Production and export of most of the fruit and tree crops except date palm on the world basis increased as much as the world population growth.

World exportation ratio (=export/world production of a fruit in the same year, tentatively called) of coffee and cocoa is about 70 %, contrary, that of other fruits is only less than 20 % in those 27 years. There is severe competition among exporting and export-oriented countries for fruit exportation. Therefore, most perennial crops including fruit and tree crops have inevitably discrepancy between real exportation and its potential. Those perennial crops cannot be adjusted to yearly changing needs, then, the cultivation of perennial crops should be evaluated from the standpoint of ecological meaning. Ecological meaning of fruit and tree crops could be evaluated with year round of leaf area index which has a good indicator in comparison with annual crops, in preventing soil erosion and keeping environment preservation.
