Abstract:
Most countries maintain regulatory restrictions or prohibitions to protect their agricultural production from plant pests not present within their boundaries.
The United States has an extensive body of regulations to provide protection from foreign plant pests.
Inspection is used to permit entry of commodities believed to be free from serious pests or for pests which can be readily discovered through inspection procedures.
Treatment which destroys the flies with minimal or no damage to the commodity is the only avenue for entry of commodities which are subject to infestation by internal feeders such as tropical fruit flies which cannot be easily discovered by inspection.
Traditionally, fumigants have been relied upon as the primary treatment method.
Recent emphasis is on non-chemical approaches using physical conditions such as heat or cold.
Treatment requirements and developmental protocols are discussed.
