ISHS Acta Horticulturae 269: Symposium on Tropical Fruit in International Trade

UNITED STATES FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE IMPORTS INDUSTRY: INDUSTRY CHARACTERISTICS AND DEMAND ANALYSIS FOR SELECTED TROPICAL AND SUB-TROPICAL PRODUCTS

Authors:   E.E. Figueroa, L. Echeverri
Abstract:
A survey of North American produce importers was conducted in the fall of 1988. The survey addressed various tropical products, but it concentrated on asparagus, artichoke, lime and pineapple. Information is presented regarding import intentions, terms of trade, packaging, transport mode, major customers of importers, and potential demand for the products of interest. It was found that demand will increase. Also, more information regarding nutrition and culinary uses of products will enhance their demand. A ranking of informational needs by product is also presented as is a ranking of product demand. Price and advertising can affect future demand for tropical products, but importers' opinions varied regarding specific products. Of the 460 surveys mailed, 209 were useful.
