Authors:   H. Kitagawa, T. Matsui, K. Kawada, J.U. Agravante
Abstract:
Japan imported 760 409 tons (metric) of banana, 138 156 tons of pineapple, 5 291 tons of mango, 5 240 tons of papaya, 3 370 tons of avocado, 2 114 tons of coconut, 1 149 tons of litchi, 104 tons of durian, 60 tons of cherimoya, 22 tons of pitaya, 15 tons of passion fruit, 15 tons of cactus fruit, 7.7 tons of granadilla, and 3.2 tons of maracuja in 1988.

Japanese like delicious and exotic fruit very much. They distinguish fruit from other foods. To the Japanese, eating fruit is a special luxury similar to the use of alcoholic drinks. Japan produced 5 600 000 tons of fruit and imported 1 482 000 tons in 1988. But there is still a big demand for tropical fruit if they are of high quality.

The biggest problem in importing tropical fruit is quarantine. In this presentation we discussed about Japan as a market of tropical fruit and some problems in importing and marketing.
