FRUIT GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT AND MATURITY INDICES OF ‘IRWIN’ MANGO IN TAIWAN

Authors:   T. Wang, C. Shiesh
Abstract:
‘Irwin’ mango (mangifera indica L.) has a typical single sigmoid growth curve. The fruit, grown in Yuchin, Taiwan, took 120 days from anthesis to full ripe. Endocarp hardened 75 days after anthesis. Skin color began to gradually change from green to red 70 days after anthesis while pulp color began to turn yellow after 60 days. The fruit reaches its maximum volume and fresh weight in 90 days, with dry weight continuing to increase until ripe. Fruit harvested 90 days after anthesis could be ripened to an acceptable quality after exposure to 100 ppm ethylene for three days. The fruit had an outgrown shoulder and a depressed stem-end when fully grown. Days from anthesis and morphological changes can be used as maturity indices.
