ISHS Acta Horticulturae 269: Symposium on Tropical Fruit in International Trade

GENETIC RESOURCES IN TROPICAL FRUIT AND NUT CROPS

Authors:   Philip J. Ito, F. Zee, R. A. Hamilton, R. Paull
Abstract:
The genetic venerability of tropical fruits and nuts becomes increasingly important with population growth and land development. Vast areas of the Amazon and other tropical areas are being cleared of native vegetation resulting in genetic materials being lost forever. With this threatening situation and the economic importance of tropical fruits and nuts, clonal repositories both internationally and nationally are being developed.

Plant germplasm is the genetic raw material necessary to create new and improved cultivars. It's importance to modern agriculture cannot be over-emphasized. The Food and fiber that people have become dependent upon are dependent upon germplasm resources throughout the world.
