ISHS Acta Horticulturae 269: Symposium on Tropical Fruit in International Trade

FRUITS AND NUTS FOR THE TROPICS WITH POTENTIAL FOR IMPROVEMENT AND INCREASED IMPORTANCE

Authors:   Philip I. Ito, R. A. Hamilton
Abstract:
Tropical fruits and nuts are becoming increasingly important in the world as a fresh and processed product. It is believed that this increasing importance has been brought about by improved transportation facilities, tourism, and improved product technology.

There are more than 700 edible fruits and nuts native to the tropics. Less than five percent of these are cultivated and marketed on a commercial scale around the world. There is a wide range in taste, texture, and flavor of these tropical crops as well as their range of adaptability. Of these many interesting, and varied fruit and nut crops, improved cultivars hold the key to success and will determine the ultimate outcome and acceptance of these various fruits and nuts.

Examples of some of the more popular tropical fruits and nuts are banana, pineapple, papaya, passion fruit, guava, avocado, macadamia nut, cashew, mango, pumelo and rambutan.
