ISHS Acta Horticulturae 267: VI Symposium on the Timing of Field Production of Vegetables

EFFECTS OF PLANT RAISING METHODS AND VARIETIES ON THE YIELD OF TRANSPLANTED ONION

Author:   R. Pessala
Abstract:
Plant raising methods for onion seedlings were studied in trials carried out in two locations in southern Finland. The differences between two modular tray systems, Plantek and Vefi, were not significant. The varieties best suited for the transplantation method were ‘Hygro’, ‘Hyton’ and ‘Oporto’. The significance of short-day treatment during plant raising was confirmed; when short-day treatment was omitted, the yields were very poor. In the cold summer of 1987, the use of fibrecloth covering increased onion yields by 10%, but in 1988 no corresponding difference in yield could be identified.
